Decarbonizing air transport will require a wide array of technological, operational and behavioural changes - and some patience. While electric flight and hydrogen propulsion may become viable alternatives for certain categories of flight in the future, other ways already exist to address carbon emissions from aviation in the near term.

Sustainable aviation fuels ("SAF") made from waste materials or even carbon dioxide itself, have the potential to significantly cut down on aviation emissions on a lifecycle basis. Carbon trading and offset programmes can compensate for unavoidable emissions.
